Championship Rounds Race Reports

Round 5: Santa Pod Raceway – VP Racing Fuels National Finals - 25th/26th September

The rueful groan, “Oh well, that’s drag racing!” slunk around the Pro Mod pits as, one after another, racers succumbed to terminal engine damage during qualifying for the VP Racing Fuels National Finals at Santa Pod. Then rain arrived to curtail the event before eliminations could even begin, bringing a hitherto bubbling series to an abrupt, bedraggled end.

Andy Robinson was crowned MSA British Drag Racing Champion for the third time in four years. The title win salvaged an otherwise cheerless year for the Hampshire Pro Modified star, lowlighted by July’s high-speed car fire in Finland as Robinson pursued the FIA European Championship. Following an emergency rebuild, his Studebaker-bodied machine never quite recaptured the early-season form which served effectively to secure him victory in the MSA series.

Robinson finished ahead of fellow Brits, Graham Ellis and Kevin Slyfield, to top a list of 29 MSA Championship challengers drawn from across Europe and, for the first time, America. US superstar Melanie Troxel’s two visits netted her seventh place.

The MSA British Drag Racing Championship roars back into action at Easter Thunderball 2011.
