Championship Rounds Race Reports

Round 3: Santa Pod Raceway – Summer Nationals – 13-14 June 2009

Andy Robinson scored another scintillating victory at the Summer Nationals. Having overcome Europe’s finest Pro Modified racers at May’s FIA Main Event, the Hampshire star demolished an all-British field in similar style during Round 3 of the MSA British Drag Racing Championship.

6.1-second elapsed times have hitherto been a rare achievement spread sparingly amongst Europe’s Pro Mod elite. Now Robinson reels them off with metronomic precision. Of six passes in qualifying and eliminations over the weekend, only one strayed into the 6.2’s. Moreover, three produced 230mph-plus terminal speeds, Robinson’s first trips into that zone.

Robinson qualified low at 6.147/225.46 on his first qualifying pass and hit a career-best speed of 231.26mph on his third. He drove faster still (231.35) on his first eliminations pass, a 6.136 bye-run, to claim Low ET and Top Speed of the Meet, and again clipped the 230mph barrier in the final. None of Robinson’s opponents had an answer for such powerhouse performances.

Defeated finalist Graham Ellis from Essex came closest. Having cracked the 230mph barrier at the Main Event, Ellis savaged his previous, 6.5sec best elapsed time with a pair of 6.2’s to propel himself to the verge of Pro Mod’s front rank.

Reigning MSA British Drag Racing Champion Philip ‘Bert’ Englefield from Surrey enjoyed an encouraging return to action after colliding with the track wall at the Main Event. With chassis and body repairs to his car completed in the nick of time, Englefield produced consistent 6-second, 200mph form to reach a semi-final encounter with the rampant Robinson.

Kevin Slyfield’s form at last began to improve too. With his car’s shakes and twitches noticeably reduced, the Dorset racer had last season’s personal-best marks in his sights before falling to first-round defeat against Ellis.

Yorkshire’s Wayne Nicholson endured a frustrating weekend. Start-line shut-offs occasioned by a popped supercharger burst panel and a small fluid leak sandwiched a solitary completed qualifying pass and the leak sprang again to sabotage his first-round eliminations match against Englefield.

Now Robinson and Ellis head to Finland and Sweden to join the summer’s hunt for European glory. The rest of the British contingent will join up for action again when the international Pro Mod show returns to Santa Pod in September for another MSA/FIA/NDRS triple-crown extravaganza.
