Championship Rounds Race Reports

Round 2:  Santa Pod Raceway – Main Event - 27-30 May 2011

The region’s driest, sunniest Spring for a century took a break over Santa Pod’s ‘Main Event’ weekend. Saturday and Sunday’s qualifying sessions were completed in the teeth of a flag-snapping headwind under leaden skies and Bank Holiday Monday’s eliminations were rained off entirely.

The combination of Round 2 of the MSA British Drag Racing Championship and Round 1 of the FIA European Pro Modified Championship had attracted 25 leading Pro Mod entries from Britain and the Continent. Sweden’s Michael Gullqvist secured pole position in the 16-car field at 6.085 seconds/234.83mph.

Reigning MSA champion Andy Robinson was the quickest British qualifier at 6.152/229.32, good for fourth place, and would have faced Swedish ex-FIA champion Mats Eriksson in a Monday morning, opening-round battle of the heavyweights.

Pro Mod newcomer Per Svedberg impressed not only with the quality and appearance of his car and transporter, but with the quality of his performance too. The experienced Swedish Top Doorslammer racer arrived with his new Dodge Demon – built, unusually, in Denmark – and an American Pro Mod legend, Scotty Cannon, accompanied by son Scott Jr., to tune it. The result was a 6.157sec ET good for fifth qualifying spot in Svedberg’s first FIA race.

Current MSA points leader Roger Moore qualified 11th (6.734/204.25) and retains his lead going into Round 3 at Santa Pod’s forthcoming Summer Nationals.

Norway’s former Top Fuel pilot, Linda Thun Tønseth, launched a new career as Europe’s first female FIA Pro Mod driver at the wheel of the ex-Undertaker Camaro bought from American racer Tommy Gray by Urban Johansson during the winter. Thun, who was unwell for much of the weekend, managed two 8-second, early-shutoff passes and looks to have an exciting future in the class.

Apart from the weather, two teams suffered especially dismaying weekends. The long-awaited debut of Andy Frost’s Red Victor 3 Vauxhall-bodied machine – the world’s first street-legal Pro Mod – was stymied by major engine damage on one of its inaugural passes. Frost had been prevented from completing his Pro Mod licensing runs when Thursday’s test day was rained off and had elected instead to compete in Super Pro qualifying on Friday, when the damage occurred.

Dutch Pro Mod veteran Henri Joosten’s 27-year drag racing career came to an abrupt, incendiary end when fire destroyed his 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air after a vicious nitrous oxide system ‘cough’. Neither the car’s on-board extinguishers nor Santa Pod’s fire crew, who were on the spot quickly, could prevent the conflagration, fanned by the strong headwind, surging back through the car. Joosten escaped mercifully unscathed but will not attempt a return to the track.

In addition, France’s Jean Dulamon, so promising with a personal-best speed at Easter, suffered terminal engine damage on his first qualifying attempt.

Andy Robinson now departs in pursuit of the European crown to contest FIA Round 2 at Sweden’s brand new Tierp Arena (9-12 June) while the rest of Britain’s Pro Mod teams will re-convene two weekends later at Santa Pod’s Summer Nationals for MSA Round 3.
