MSA British Drag Racing Championship
Philip Englefield

Philip Englefield

Car: '38 Ford Coupe
Occupation: Automotive engineering
Home Town/Country: New Malden
Team: BA Racing
Best ET: 6.564 seconds
Best Terminal Speed: 215.15mph

A veteran competitor in Pro Modified with crew chief Andy Wright, Bert has previously held the British Pro Mod record. The transition from a nitrous-assisted to a supercharged methanol motor proved difficult in 2006 but the car began to approach its potential at the end of the season.

In 2007, a failed starter motor eliminated Bert from Easterís MSA Round 1, although a 6.86sec./208.25mph demo pass at the end of the day indicated a return to form for the BA Racing team.

At Mayís Main Event (MSA Rnd. 2), Bert qualified provisionally 11th (6.73) in a strong field of European entries before the rain-out. At Juneís Summer Nationals (MSA Rnd. 3), he finished a close runner-up to Andy Robinson, a result adjudged visually after the timing system failed. Robinsonís data download after that final suggested he might have run a 6.2. If so, Bert must have run close to his own career best of 6.564.

At Septemberís FIA European Finals (MSA Rnd. 4), Bert responded with a combative but losing 6.87/203.46 as a first-round alternate after a disappointing failure to qualify. Matters improved at the National Finals (MSA Rnd. 5): Bert hit a stout 6.73/208.61 on the way to his second final-round of the year before losing the decider again to Robinson.
